May 2018
Dear Parents,
The first graders have learned to read words containing 2 short vowel sounds like basket and helmet. They have learned to read and spell many words by sight. Sometimes they need to be reminded of the vowel sounds in words. Examples:
smiles is a silent e word with an s on the end; picnic is 2 parts-pic nic.
We are working on reading sentences fluently and pausing at the period at the end of a sentence. The children have learned how to read and write questions.
Thank you for all the work you do with your child at home. Regular reading and spelling practice really boosts student progress. I will not see the children every day in May and June because of assessments I must do in grades K-3. Also, The children will be involved in special class activities and field trips. Please continue to encourage your child to read and write at home even when I do not send specific homework.
The final Title I progress reports will be sent home at the end of the school year. We will decide in the fall which students will get extra reading support next year.
Please don’t hesitate to email me with questions or to set up a conference if you have questions.
Linda
